Representative of Graduates – Address

Mr. Natnael Fitsum Tekeste
H.E. Minister of Justice,
Distinguished guests,
Fellow graduates,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is with immense pride and humility that I stand before you today as a representative of this exceptional group of graduates. As we gather here today, we are not only celebrating academic achievements but also reaffirming our commitment to the values that have shaped our past and will guide our future during this Independence Anniversary week.

We are privileged to be part of a nation that places a high value on education as the cornerstone of progress and development.

We have been the beneficiaries of an educational policy that provides free access to education at all levels; an investment on human capital that is laying the foundation for a brighter future, a future that is built upon the pillars of knowledge, peace, and development. We extend our sincere thanks to our people and government for their steadfast support.

I would like to express our deepest appreciation to the Ministry of Justice for recognizing the importance of continuous learning and professional development. Through the enrolment of around a hundred members of its staff and lawyers from various ministries in the Master’s degree program at the University of South Africa (UNISA), the ministry has shown its forward-thinking approach to building a strong and capable justice system that is vital for the progress and prosperity of our beloved nation. The Ministry, with its provision of resources and logistical support, has not only equipped us to contribute significantly to the administration of justice in Eritrea but also instilled in us a profound sense of duty and purpose to serve our people.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to UNISA and its liaison office in Eritrea for their consistent support and guidance throughout the journey. UNISA has taught us that knowledge is not merely acquired but also created, and it is our responsibility to contribute to the intellectual wealth of Africa. We also congratulate UNISA for becoming a part of the history of the development of the justice sector in Eritrea during its 150 years anniversary.

Our journey began in 2020, during the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought unprecedented challenges to the world. Our lives were disrupted, and the pursuit of our education was met with unforeseen obstacles. The subsequent lockdown tested our adaptability, flexibility, and perseverance. In this regard, I would like to acknowledge those among us who faced additional hurdles as they pursued their education. Some of my fellow students had to overcome the challenges of traveling from other zobas, and dealing with logistical complexities just to be present in the capital city of Asmara. Their determination and commitment to their studies are truly commendable.

Furthermore, many of us encountered the delicate balance between our academic pursuits and our social and family responsibilities. Some had to juggle the demands of parenthood or fulfil other significant family obligations. It is important to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices and support of our families, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. Their unwavering love, understanding, and sacrifices have made our achievements possible.

It certainly is a momentous occasion as we are graduating during a time of great pride, joy and reflection, as our nation celebrates its 33rd independence anniversary. The theme of this year’s celebrations, “Peace anchored on Resilience,” resonates deeply with us as graduates, for it is these very qualities that have enabled us to overcome the challenges we faced and emerge victorious.

Finally, I stand here today proud of each and every one of us. Let us step forth with the resolve to serve our society with integrity and dedication. Let us be the embodiment of the values we hold dear, and let us work tirelessly to ensure that the rule of law is not merely a concept but a living, breathing aspect of our daily lives.

I extend my warmest congratulations to all of you.
Happy 33rd Independence Anniversary!
Victory to the Masses!
